My family is not a flip flop wearing family so I know nothing about the quality or how long they could be expected to last. I try to put reasonable quality items in
my shoeboxes and struggled about these $1 flip flops. I finally decided that I could spend my $21 and shoe 70 children for, say at least a year, or spend that $21 on 4 to 5 pairs of more expensive flip flops and shoe those children for perhaps two to three years. I figured I'd get 70 years out of my $21 instead of 8 to 15. Once again, this quality verse quantity for packing shoe boxes remains a dilemma. How do you decide?
One reason I am gathering so many at DG after my Family Dollar Flip Flop Deal is because I share with the kids at church for their Operation Christmas Child packing party each year. Last year the children's pastor asked specifically for flip flops and I only had a few to give, so I am on a mission to not only put one in each of my boxes but have 75 to 100 to give him.
And here is the real reason behind my flip flop frenzy:

I love the picture of the worn out flip flops. It causes me to want to get more flip flops. I love your reasoning for buying many over a few. Thank you so much for your blog. I follow you and have saved much money and I share what I learn with my group of OCC friends at church. Keep up the good work.
ReplyDeleteThanks so much for taking the time to comment and let me know you are finding help thru my posts. It can get lonely on this side of the post and I wonder if anyone gets anything out of it all. And how exciting that you are sharing with your OCC friends!
ReplyDeleteMy husband was very excited about the Dollar General flip-flops the other day. He picked up 50 pair for OCC! :) I am gonna have to make a trip to look for socks now though!
ReplyDeleteGreat to hear, Chrys. I'll try and get the pics of the socks up soon.
ReplyDeleteCongratulations!
ReplyDeleteI have some felt ribbon. It's about 1/2 inch thick. I don't know what to do with it, but I want to make an OCC craft. Anybody have any ideas?
Hmmm, I'll think on it. I've never seen felt ribbon. Right now my mind is on decorating flip flops so I would try wrapping it around the top part to cover it and then make a little flower of some sort to attach at the center.
ReplyDeletePerhaps it would also make hair bows. I'll keep my thinking cap on and see if I can come up with anything.
Good idea, thanks!
ReplyDeleteThis is amazing! What you do to help is amazing and very inspiring. Thanks so much for sharing!
ReplyDeleteThank YOU, Ashley.
ReplyDeleteCheryl, I wanted to comment on your dilemma of quantity vs quality. The members of my church are working together to fill boxes. I bring a lot of fun things that I found real cheap. Other people bring only a few things, but they are of a lot higher quality that the things I buy. By working together we can make sure each child has something of value that will last a good while, as well as lots of fun "filler" items. As long as I know the children will be getting something sturdy to keep, I'm okay with providing the filler!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Stacey, for your input. That's a great way to look at it!
